ANMA 30th Annual Convention is Here!

By: Mary Dunlap, N.D. for Dr. Donald Hayhurst

ANMA is proud to announce its 30th annual educational convention. This event is always well attended and successfully brings together members, ANMA officers and board of directors, including merchants and other interested parties. In our effort to constantly improve, we will have many exhibitors with the very latest products for your practice. The main purpose for each annual convention is to offer continuing educational credits by presenting current updated health information to enhance your knowledge and practice abilities. This year the ANMA convention will be held July 29, 30, 31, 2011 at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In past years there have been many discussions involving legislation, scope of practice rights, and qualifications necessary for such practice. This year the ANMA convention is no less important. Many changes nationwide are taking place in the naturopathic profession, and it’s imperative that you as a member be involved. This is an opportunity for the membership to voice opinions and suggestions to be discussed and considered. Sunday will also include CPR certification for ANMA attendees provided by the American Heart Association. This is an opportunity to gain CPR certification, or to renew your certification as required every two years.

If you haven’t already made your plans to attend the convention, you should do it today. ANMA Board of Directors will be there to meet each and everyone of you. See you soon! For more information about the ANMA convention, please read pages 4, 5 and 17 of JANMA Volume 15 Number 2 pdf file.

Lastly, I would like to thank all who contribute and support ANMA. With their help, ANMA has played a major part in defending the rights of the Naturopathic profession for the past 30 years and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Self Limiting Medicine

By: Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph & Dr. Eric Carter

Self-limited or self limiting:
Limited by its own nature; limited by internal or personal characteristics rather than by outside influences….

I have been a Naturopathic Doctor for almost 30 years and I have seen a lot of changes in our profession. I see traditional Naturopathy being stolen by Naturopathic MD wannabes and the allopathic medical community embracing more and more alternative practices as ‘evidence based medicine’ and claiming them as their own.

From my perspective and looking at the writing on the wall, especially with the Obama health care plan, we may find traditional Naturopathy out in the cold.

For the past year I have been working with a group called WONMP (World Organization of Natural Medical Practitioners) that is helping me re-establish the principles of what traditional Naturopathy has always been about and that is ‘the alleviation of the pain and suffering of the sick and the poor. Our traditional Naturopathic principles can be traced back to ancient times with Hippocrates and Galen as examples. The Bible states as I paraphrase the statement ‘let the fruit of the tree be your food and the leaf thereof be your medicine to ‘let olives be your meat and olive leaf be your medicine. How much research has there been on olive leaf extract. The baby Jesus was given Frankincense as a gift which we know comes from the Boswellia tree and again how much research has there been on Boswellic acid?

I have been working with Dr. Eric Carter CEO of WONMP and Dr. Charles McWilliams “Doc”, Chancellor of WONMP and I have come to believe that we can accomplish that concept of ‘the alleviation of the pain and suffering of the sick and the poor’, yes even here in the United States.

I think that we must ask ourselves who owns the rights to traditional natural medicine? Is traditional natural healthcare secular medicine under all of the rules and statutes directed by the very group that wants to see disappear, or do we somehow go back to our roots and know that what we practice comes from GOD and cannot be usurped by the powers that be. We practice with the same knowledge that has been handed down from time immemorial. Oh yes we have added many new supplements and new devices that have helped, yet the true work of Naturopathy has always been teaching the same natural concepts of lifestyle changes that follow GOD’s laws. It is time that we look into our hearts and see what is happening to Traditional Naturopathy and realize that there must be another way, and I think WONMP and what it has to offer might help.

From the calls and emails finding their way to my desk, I get the distinct feeling that “alternative” medicine is taking on the attributes of a “self-limited” disease.

With almost daily frequency WONMP receives an email from a desperate individual, searching for an alternative practitioner they can afford. They seek help and compassion and are willing to pay within their means. Unfortunately few alternative practitioners are “within the means” of the average needy individual. With many hundreds of practitioners to choose from, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to accommodate the true needy. Even the upper middle class are beginning to protest.

The story is always the same; desiring to “get healthy”, to feel better, to believe there is an answer to their health woe’s, these desperate individuals save the money to visit an alternative practitioner, however, sadly and more often than not, they quickly learn that they must choose between paying the mortgage, or spending hundreds of dollars monthly in high priced supplements.

These unfortunate souls generally end up right back at the conventional doctor’s office, right back where they started, just as sick and tired, and with lighter pockets. They realize that a hundred bucks each month in prescription medicine is the only viable way out of their pain.

Occasionally the story is about how the individual turned to a practitioner that connected them to some fancy woo-woo gadget with lights, bells and whistles that “supposedly” diagnosis and treats any and all human aliments, known and unknown to mankind, and all they experienced was a reduction in the pocket-book. While it seems there is certainly a faction of the people that swear by these devices, by and large it seems that the conditions that “disappear” are likely self-limited to begin with, and the wary public figures this out a few hundred or thousand bucks later.

It is becoming more and more common to hear from these past patriots of alternatives, that have very little good to say about “alternative medicine”, and rightly so. I wonder about the many we “don’t” hear from and how this trend is ultimately going to affect every alternative practitioner. When you lose public trust, you lose public funds!

The bottom line is; as alternatives become too expensive or to “out there”, the public tends to put all alternative practitioners in the same pot, and label all as “nuts” and money mongers. This may be the very reason alternative practitioners remain largely un-impeded by the so-called “powers that be”, or the “drug cartel” that I hear so much about. One thing is for certain, the drug companies did not amass ultra-fortunes by being stupid. They are likely comforted in the knowledge that at the current pace, alternative medicine is “self-limiting” by its own foolish practices.

Perhaps it is time that we examine why we are doing, what we are doing and treat some of these symptoms before they become our “un-doing”. Many conventional practitioners undoubtedly adopted integrative medicine to “cash-in” on the growing demand, many others found answers to their own health issues and desire to share with others, and many more simply feel a responsibility or calling to share biblical health wisdom.

There is certainly a segment of society that can afford high priced alternatives, and I suggest we leave them to the astute marketer, that can afford offices on Rodeo Drive. For those that want others to benefit from alternatives as they personally have, for those that feel a responsibility to share scriptural instruction; and for “all” practitioners that want to see alternative medicine gain credibility, perhaps even insurance coverage, I suggest we take a lesson from a small but very busy, and obviously very effective, WONMP primary care clinic on Nevis Island West Indies. Keep in mind that Nevis is little more than a hump of tropical dirt, measuring about 35 square miles with a population of around 10,000 very poor natives. Adequate food is a challenge for their budget, much less medical expense. This small clinic is operated by Dr. Charles McWilliams “Doc”, Chancellor of WONMP and serves as the primary training facility for practitioners seeking certification and licensure through WONMP.

In a recent phone conversation while on lunch break from patients, Doc told me that he had visited with 20 patients that morning in about a three hour period. Keep in mind that visits include a complete work-up of vitals, blood and urine, with both of the latter being processed on premise at the time of appointment. Following intake the patient and his or her lab results are passed to Doc whereby he completes the physical exam and decides on the course of therapy (primarily herbal tea). This means that he not only performed a complete work-up and applied the results immediately, he also treated about 7 patients per hour. Quizzing him about how the low income could afford all this, and how he could possibly spend appropriate time with each patient, he gave me a very simple answer. First, he has a couple of trained and efficient staff members to move patients through each step of the process, and second, the average patient spends a less than $100 U.S., including lab, visit and medicine! Many even receive physical therapy.

If you are following me here, we just learned that a “Gilligans Island Clinic” where money is the most scarce commodity, brought-in $2,000 in three hours…

I will also “highlight” the fact that Dr. McWilliams is the only physician I know that can provide primary care using 99% cheap herbal medicines! (I did not ask permission to divulge this information for fear Doc would deny the release of what I perceive as “valuable” insight for practitioners. Therefore, if this is my last article, you will know he has “spiked my tea”).

Reading the above will give you a little insight to the value of WONMP’s practitioner licensure program. Practitioners have access to proven effective natural medicine training with a special WONMP “twist” that can increase patient results over 80%, have access to a system that can increase family income while lowering patient cost, and that provides the protection and credibility practitioners need to succeed in today’s tough economy. WONMP is here to assist practitioners in service to the needy, to teach you to help those that truly need our help in learning how to be healthy and then making sure they can “afford” good health. Practitioners are not expected to “starve” to accomplish this as you can see from the above.

At the current pace, natural health practitioners are turning their backs on these millions of suffering individuals in the U.S. that are just as “bad-off” as those in Nevis West Indies, and that cannot afford our high priced clinics and multi-level supplements. We are catering to the upper class and poking the needy in the eye. We are training our suppliers that we will pay excessive cost for supplements, and we are feeding right into the hands of the “powers that be” by facilitating our own downfall. This is counter to what God’s natural medicine is all about, and certainly not what being a WONMP licensed practitioner is about. We are taking from the needy and giving most of that to the network marketing companies, then we need more, so we raise our prices. It is madness, and failure on an installment plan.

I suggest that it is time for practitioners to “take a lesson” from WONMP’s small, poor Nevis clinic. I suspect there are not very many practitioners bringing in $2,000 in 3 hours, and still providing affordable medical care. Is it possible to provide a similar service in the U.S. – YES I think it is, and perhaps to even increase the profit margin. We don’t have to pay Nevis’s 40% import duty on herbs and supplies.

It is time for us to focus on credibility and less expensive “alternatives”, to utilize proven and inexpensive screening, and to make sure that our “energy” devices really do generate energy. It is time to ramp-up professionalism and a time to set-aside woo-woo medicine, a time to remember why we do what we do and really help the needy. The recent launch of the WONMP Auxiliary Clinic program is in preparation for this move to “get back to basics”. This program will allow practitioner clinics to be “chartered” as an auxiliary under WONMP and includes training at the Nevis clinic. WONMP is currently developing an additional practitioner training facility in Ecuador. Practitioners can learn more about WONMP licensure and auxiliary clinic program by visiting our website at or contacting WONMP by email at

I encourage all practitioners to self-assess and decide what their own goals are. WONMP affiliation may help you implement a system that will increase income and patient services while lowering patient cost. Practitioners can get paid for their services and education, rather than earning money for supplement suppliers and network marketing companies, and truly help those that need our help at the same time. WONMP envisions a chain of auxiliary clinics around the world with patients lined-up outside waiting for their $99 all-inclusive appointment, and we look forward to helping practitioner make this a possibility for them and their families. Thank you.

Methylation: The Molecule that Unlocks the Body's Healing Response

By: Jack Tips, N.D., Ph.D., C.Hom., C.C.N.
Part 1 of 2

A Key To: Detoxification, Cell Repair, Graceful Aging, Weight Loss, Neurotransmitter Balance, Healthy Immunity, Disease Prevention, Nerve Protection, and so much more.

A molecular biologist could write a million pages on methylation and only touch on a small fraction of the subject. Methyl groups are largely ignored in nutritional healing, much to the detriment of a therapeutic program’s ultimate success. Here, in this 2-part discourse, discover how providing the body with nutritional methyl donors can be the dividing line between success and failure. Even more importantly, methylation holds an answer to the chemical toxicity and electromagnetic field damage that causes inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and DNA breakage. Natural health clinicians today are quickly realizing that methyl donors are a new solution to environmentally caused maladies.

Our bodies conduct over a billion methylation[1] processes every moment of our lives! More than any other molecule, methyl groups[2] (CH3) are involved in the healthy function of the body’s life processes, and more than any other molecule, the lack of methyl groups for methylation is involved in chronic, degenerative developments, autoimmune concerns, hormonal processes, and neurotransmitter imbalances. In fact, healthy methylation processes are synonymous with good health and an inability to methylate is synonymous with symptom expressions and poor health. For many people, improving methylation provides new hope for depression, anxiety, autism, and the myriad symptoms that come from exposure to environmental toxins that interfere with the body’s genetic expression of optimal health.

On/Off Switches. Methyl groups are the on/off switches of the cells’ activities—turn on a genetic expression, turn off an enzyme reaction, turn on serotonin (and feel good), turn off inflammation (and prevent chronic degenerative and auto-immune concerns), turn on melatonin (and sleep), turn off delusional thoughts (and survive), turn on the detoxification of a phenol (and stop food allergies), turn on neurotransmitters (and not be depressed), turn off neurotransmitters (avoid anxious excitability), turn on the tissue repair mechanism (and heal), turn off the stress response before it damages healthy cells.

These are but a few of the many important switches that methyl groups facilitate, and thus here is a critically important topic. If our patients are short a few methyl groups, their bodies cannot respond to the healing directive of our natural therapies. If vitamins, minerals, nutriments, coenzymes, herbs, and homeopathic remedies are to help the body, methylation processes must be available and able to perform. Hence, methylation takes us deep into the heart of healing, into the very core of the individual cells where all lasting healing occurs.

A Growing Problem. A New Solution!

As a seminar teacher for natural health professionals around the world, I have been hearing a consistent concern throughout all the disciplines (doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopaths, and clinical nutritionists) that’s only getting more noticeable each year. Natural health clinicians are not getting the results that they used to get, and results are more hard won than ever before.

The times have changed and our natural health therapeutic approaches must evolve, or there is a diminishing return in results and patient referrals.

Not too long ago, a chiropractor could give an adjustment, restore full nerve energy, and the body would quickly correct a wide variety of symptoms including hypoglycemia, migraines, and asthma. Not so today. Years ago, food-based supplements worked quick miracles for people needing tissue supports. Not so today. Years ago, a single dose constitutional homeopathic remedy often quickly restored vital health. Not so today as homeopaths must become experts in “case management” and even deviate from the founding principles of the Organon of Medicine[3] (e.g. repeating the dose) to more effectively address what the body must do to restore health in the 21st Century.

If the instruction manual (DNA) is flawed, or the transcriber of the manual (RNA) misinterprets the information, then the job won’t get done correctly. The “job” is proper cellular function upon which our health depends.

Bucket Theory? Simply put, clinicians are not getting the positive results today that they were getting ten years ago. The “bucket theory” proposes that the thousands of modern-day toxins (chemicals, pesticides, water pollutants, cosmetics, dental fillings, vaccinations, industrial wastes, etc.) gradually accumulate in the body’s 70 trillion cells and then, when there is a tipping point such as too much accumulation or a stressful phase of life, then the body’s self-regulatory processes break down and chronic degenerative diseases result.

This break down is often called “cellular inflammation” and Time Magazine,[4] featured this information as the “Secret Killer” and demonstrated the link between inflammation and the degenerative maladies that afflict humanity.

The bucket theory, often rejected by the medical model that prefers to link one cause with one effect as a non-individualized occurrence, is still considered to be part of the reason that there are so many “no-known-cause, no-known-cure” diseases. It’s not the sole cause because nutritional depletion is an equal factor. Nutrition provides fuel for the chemical energy of life (ATP – Adenosine TriPhosphate), anti-oxidants to reduce inflammatory and free radical processes, fatty acids for cell membrane integrity, detoxification support, and methyl groups for proper genetic expression and cellular function.

The onslaught of cellular damage has only increased in the past ten years despite the heroic efforts of green, organic, and environmentalist movements. The toxic environment damages cellular function deep within the cell’s epigenetics,[5] ionizing (X-rays, mammograms) and non-ionizing (cell phones, airport scanners) radiations damage DNA, and genetically modified foods damage DNA more and more every day as “Round Up® Ready” [6]genetically modified (GMO) toxins are being incorporated into infants DNA around the world.[7] No one who eats, drinks, or breathes is immune or safe from the onslaught of health damaging environmental influences, and the accumulation and effects of these negative influences become “obstacles to cure” that block the body’s efforts to correct errant processes that result in disease.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction. Recently we’ve seen where Science’s attention has turned to “mitochondrial[8] dysfunction” as a catch-all for all the no-known-cause, no-known-cure diseases. This is the realm of the mitochondria organelle and its functions known as the Krebs Cycle,[9] beta-oxidation,[10] and mitochondrial mDNA damage from free radicals and inflammation. Blessedly, once again, our natural therapies are able to rise to this old but newly named challenge and deliver effective solutions despite humanity raising the ante on Mother Nature.

The one key area of cellular function that has been overlooked (until now) is methylation. Based on my clinical experience and the experience of hundreds of practitioners who are embracing healing at the cellular level as necessary for clinical results, nutritional methyl donors are restoring the vibrancy to our patients and practices because they unlock the aforementioned resistance to healing by supporting the cells with the nutrition required for them to health themselves.

Cellular Healing. All genuine healing is within the cell. As we master nutritional support of the cells, the cells respond by healing themselves and thus restoring their optimal function. When cells function optimally, then tissues function properly. When tissues function optimally, then organs and glands function properly, and when that occurs, the body can live in excellent health. Seems simple enough.

Today, the cells are blocked from their optimal function as man-made chemicals and radiations damage the DNA, cause membrane inflammation, and damage the very energy processes within the cells. This means that our healing therapies must be able to address the cell, its organelles, and life processes which include the production of ATP energy, RNA transcription of healthy DNA, and of course, methylation is right in the middle of it all.

The 5 R’s of Cellular Healing[11]
There are five critical functions every eukaryotic[12] cell must perform to be healthy, function optimally, and prevent cancer and avoid apoptosis (self-induced death).

They are:
1. Remove the Source (address the cause)
2. Regenerate the Cell Membrane
3. Restore ATP Energy
4. Reduce Inflammation and Free Radical Damage
5. Reestablish Methylation

When practitioners master these five interdependent processes, and help their patients restore healthy cell function, their practices flourish, just as they should, with new patients based on success and referrals.

Methylation used to be taken for granted, something with which we did not have to concern ourselves clinically, any more than we’d offer a glass of water to a fish. In days past, most of our patients had plenty of methyl groups to conduct the body’s myriad life processes and help receive the healing directives that natural health practitioners provide through food and herbal nutrition, remedies, supplements, and therapies. Today, however, we find that people’s methylation processes are impaired, and adding methyl donors to a nutritional therapy is often required for the therapy to work well.

Once we understand that the body uses methyl groups to heal and restore healthy functions, and once we understand that many of our patients are depleted in methyl groups, we come to the realization that supporting methylation is in the same category as providing water to a thirsty, dehydrated person—absolutely essential.

Stress, Revisited. Further, the body has an inherent hierarchy or priority list about what it does with methyl groups. This means that if methyl groups are in short supply, the body innately determines what functions get the molecules and what functions suffer without. The top priority for methyl donors goes to the stress response. Now we see why so many people are methyl group depleted. The busy, multi-tasking, high anxiety, stressful workaday world we live in causes an unprecedented amount of stress and voraciously uses up methyl groups.

The body uses millions of methyl groups to turn on the stress response according to the laws of nature. Reciprocally the body uses millions of methyl groups to turn off the stress response. If a person does not have a full complement of methyl donors, that person can turn on the stress response and then not be able to turn it off. When we examine the high level of stress in which modern day humanity dwells, we can better understand that stress and episodes of traumatic stress can not only lock people into a chronic inner cellular inflammatory cycle (called the no/onoo cycle),[13] it can literally occupy the lion’s share of the body’s methyl groups. The areas of the body that have shortages are those that develop symptoms and diseases. A shortage in the brain results in depression or anxiety, depending on where the shortage exists. A shortage in the thyroid will result in poor manufacture of thyroxin hormone. This shortage-symptom syndrome can affect any and every tissue in the body.

Methylation Mechanics. Methylation is simply the addition of a methyl group (CH3) to another molecule (enzyme, RNA, chromosome (DNA), toxin, protein, etc.) Methylation is mostly the addition of a methyl molecule to something. The removal of a methyl group is called demethylation. The adding or subtracting of a methyl group causes profound changes to occur as they activate or deactivate the body’s life code and thus affect core life processes. Some people will use the word, methylation, to describe either the addition or subtraction of a methyl group from a molecule. Either way, this is the body’s secret alchemical process of converting one molecule to another, such as converting a fat-soluble toxin into a water-soluble toxin that can more easily be eliminated from the body. A shortage of methyl groups inevitably means poor detoxification, and poor detoxification inevitably means diseases will develop.

So methylation is the body using a specific molecule (CH3) , to work countless wonders. In fact, methylation is a process that is an important dividing line between health and disease.

Ubiquitous Molecules? In biology and chemistry, human beings are referred to as “carbon-based units of life” and thus we know that Organic Chemistry is a carbon-based science. Our world, our bodies, and thus our lives, are based on the element, carbon (C)—the very backbone of all life on Earth. Carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and it readily reacts with other elements. So two of our most basic, essential, and abundant elements-carbon and hydrogen, easily join together as one carbon and three hydrogen atoms, and together they become a critically important molecule called a “methyl group”(CH3) which can appear in three forms: anion with 8 electrons, a radical with 7 electrons, and a cation with 6 electrons. In these three forms, methyl groups serve billions of chemical functions throughout our bodies.

Now you might ask, “Why do we need to talk about a molecule whose atoms are abundantly everywhere in the universe? Like a fish in the ocean seeking water, our bodies live in a world of the elements that make methyl groups—carbon and hydrogen. Further, oxygen is the third most abundant element and that’s great for breathing and redox reactions such as making the energy of life—ATP which also involves methyl groups. [Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe, probably to ensure some levity in our lives.] So one might think that methylation is a “given,” a no-problemo basis of life, something we don’t have to worry about. But au contraire, my friends; methyl groups are something we must understand to help our patients with their most dire concerns.

The fact is, we can and do run short of methyl groups. Further, methyl groups decline with age and thus supplementing methyl donors is an “anti-aging” therapy that can prevent cognitive decline.[14] When our bodies have a dearth of methyl groups, there are dire consequences such as cancer, autism, diabetes, chronic fatigue, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and well actually—most all diseases and severe metabolic dysfunctions, with a few exceptions for “over-methylation” conditions.

Here are a few conditions that medical science teaches are associated with “Under Methylation:”

• Addictive Tendencies
• Aggravate on high doses of B-12/Folate (though much needed)
• Allergic skin disorders (Eczema, Hives, Contact Dermatitis)
• Allergies, seasonal, airborne
• Aging
• Anorexia
• Anxiety
• Asthma
• Autism (45% are under-methylators)
• Autoimmune disorders (Mitochondrial Diseases)
• Bipolar disorder
• Bulimia
• Chronic Degenerative Diseases (Mitochondrial Diseases)
• Chronic Fatigue
• Colds, Flu – frequent
• Competitive, overly
• Delusions, Delusional thinking
• Depression
• Detoxification, poor
• Headaches, frequent
• Heat intolerance
• Hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD
• Hyperchlorhydria (excessive stomach acid)
• Insomnia
• Joint pain
• Joint swelling
• Joint stiffness
• Lacrimation, eyes water excessively
• Libido, excessive
• Muscle pains
• Nausea, unexplained
• Neurotransmitters, low (serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, norepinephrine)
• Neurotransmitter, high (histamine)
• Obesity
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
• Oppositional Defiant Disorder
• Pain, hypersensitive
• Perspiration, excessive
• Phobias
• Psychosis
• Puritis, itching
• Rhinitis, vasomotor
• Salivation, excessive
• SAMe, do well on SAMe supplementation
• Schizophrenia

In Summary, Methyl Groups:
1. Turn on and off genes and their genetic expressions
2. Protect telomeres – reduce aging processes
3. Support neurotransmitter processes – prevent depression, anxiety, insomnia, and facilitate proper brain function
4. Detoxify dangerous chemicals and heavy metals – prevent cell damage and disease, makes glutathione (the body’s most important detoxifier)
5. Prevent hormone imbalances – that can cause cancer, weight gain, fibrous tissue, endocrine confusion
6. Turn the stress response on and off – and if left on, then disease results such as obesity, Syndrome X, and inflammatory conditions
7. Repair cellular communication processes – a facet of immune system alerts linked with auto-immune diseases
8. Weight Loss – helps solve hormone resistance and toxic hormonal activity (weight loss resistance is actually a cell membrane/hormonal issue—not a calorie and exercise issue)
9. Mitochondrial integrity – protects the mitochondrial production of ATP by synthesizing glutathione[15]—one of the antioxidants that protects the cell from free radical damage.

In the next edition of the Journal of the American Naturopathic Medical Association, we’ll continue this discussion on how the methylation process works via homocysteine, and how it impacts aging, allergies, anxiety, autoimmune dysfunction, depression, detoxification, glutathione production, and weight loss resistance.

By: Tsu-Tsair Chi, NMD, PhD

There is no doubt that estrogen plays an important role in human development. However, many conditions can arise from estrogen dominance. Since the Women’s Health Initiative Study was halted due to the adverse and often life-threatening causes of synthetic hormones, many women have explored other, more natural, options to balance hormones.

With the development of bioidentical hormones, many women have gained the benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with lesser side effects than with synthetic hormones. However, individuals on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) still need to exercise caution because these hormones, although considered natural, can lead to estrogen dominance through certain conversion pathways (see Myomin Mechanism figure).

BHRT is necessary for those who are deficient in specific hormones. So what can they take that will counteract the adverse effects of these hormones while still getting their benefits? Myomin provides a solution for people using bioidentical progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and estradiol. By reducing aromatase expression, Myomin effectively reduces the direct or indirect conversion of these hormones to estrone and estradiol.

Details about Myomin’s functions and studies were published in the April, 2006 issue of this journal and also in the December, 2009 issue of the Townsend Letter. Here is a summary of Myomin’s functions and applications:

Myomin Reduces Aromatase Expression

An in vivo study shows that the combination of herbs inhibits aromatase enzyme expression in endometrial and ovarian tissues of rats. After 28 days of Myomin administration, aromatase expression was reduced by 100% in the endometrium and reduced by 85.6% in the ovary. Reduction of aromatase results in reduced conversion of other hormones into estradiol and estrone, the harmful forms of estrogen.

Myomin Reduces Estradiol in Animal and Clinical Studies

In one animal study, 90 female mice were given Myomin for 30, 60, and 180 days. Their average estradiol level after each period was 50.6, 36.6, and 32.4 pg/ml, respectively. Their estradiol level progressively reduced and then stabilized. Each group was then given Myomin for 30, 60 and 180 days, respectively.

A human study involved 60 postmenopausal women with cysts and fibroids. After only 10 days on Myomin, their average estradiol level reduced by 47.88%. The fibroids, cysts, and the associated pain gradually reduced as well.

Myomin’s effect on estradiol level is well illustrated in a case study by Dr. Iannetta who has a postmenopausal female patient who initially had very high estradiol level at 413 pg/mL. After taking Myomin for 14 months, her estradiol level reduced to 43 pg/mL.

In a similar study, Dr. Jonathan Wright has a male patient in his 50’s who had elevated estradiol level. None of the supplements he had tried seem to have any effect on estradiol. After taking Myomin for 4 months, his estradiol has sharply dropped. This particular case shows that aromatase inhibitors like Myomin may have uses for estrogen-related conditions in men.

Myomin Increases Estrogen Quotient (EQ)

EQ is defined as estriol (E3) divided by the sum of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2): EQ = E3/ (E1+E2).

In Dr. Jonathan Wright’s article (Townsend Letter. Jan 2010; 56-58), he explains that estriol becomes an anti-carcinogen in the presence of estrone and estradiol. Therefore, a higher EQ (EQ > 1), meaning a preponderance of estriol, signals lower cancer risk.

Individuals on BHRT need to be aware of this quotient since hormones such as testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA are eventually converted into E1, E2 and/or E3 (please refer to Myomin Mechanism figure). It is therefore important to block the pathway to estradiol and estrone in order to increase the quotient.

Myomin blocks the conversion of androstenedione into estrone and testosterone into estradiol. This means that the production of these two forms of estrogen is reduced. In the meantime, estriol continues to be produced freely. Since there is more production of estriol than there is estrone and estradiol, the EQ increases. Thus, BHRT users need to add Myomin because it contributes to the increase of EQ, lowering cancer risk.

Myomin Improves Ovarian Cysts, Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids, and Fibrocystic Breasts

• Ovarian Cysts. Myomin was given to 85 female patients with ovarian cysts for 3 months. Out of the 85, 40 cases were related to endometriosis (hyatidiform cyst), 44 cases were simple ovarian cysts, and one case of ovarian cancer. The cysts and symptoms of 15 patients completely cleared with no recurrence three months after the study. In 34 patients, the size of the cyst reduced by 50% and some of the associated symptoms were relieved.
• Ovarian Cysts and Endometriosis. Another study tested the effect of Myomin on 255 women with ovarian cyst and endometriosis. Myomin was completely effective in 57.6% of the patients after 5 months. Some improvement was observed in 34.1% of the patients.
• Uterine Fibroids. Myomin was combined with Revivin and administered to 60 women with uterine fibroids. Within 6 months to a year, the combination was found to inhibit growth by 69.2%.
• Fibrocystic Breasts. Myomin was also effective for fibrocystic breasts in both men and women. The study included 45 women and 5 men with fibrocystic breasts. Results of the study revealed that Myomin was effective in 60% of the patients after 6 months while improvement was observed in 30% of the patients. Among the 5 men in the study, the cysts cleared completely in 3 cases.

Dangers of BHRT

Even with natural alternatives to HRT, like BHRT, the dangers cannot be completely eliminated. For example, Dr. McDonald reports that a patient was given bioidentical progesterone cream for her PMS. Ten months later, she developed a lump in her breast. Similarly, Dr. Shemesh reports that a patient was given a bioidentical hormone cream to correct very low levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone (determined through a saliva test). A year later, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

This is not really surprising. HRT use has been directly tied to increased ovarian cancer risk. According to a recent study, HRT users (with or without progesterone) have a 44% increased risk for ovarian cancer. Women using an estrogen patch have a 13% higher ovarian cancer risk. Those who use intra-vaginal estrogen have a 23% increased ovarian cancer risk (Journal of the American Medical Association. Nov 2009).

The risk may not only be from estrogen directly but from other hormones as well.

Progesterone has already been listed as a carcinogenic substance under California’s Prop 65 since 1988. Furthermore, breast cancer cells have both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Tumor growth is stimulated by these two hormones as well.

Testosterone therapy is more common among males. While it may have some benefits such as increasing muscle tone and libido, issues can arise when too much testosterone is aromatized to estrogen.

DHEA is an androgen precursor that can be aromatized to estrogen and contribute to excess estrogen production. The use of DHEA has been linked to gynecomastia cases in men and breast cancer cases in women.

Even women on birth control pills should also beware of their risk for estrogen dominance. Birth control pills contain small amounts of synthetic progesterone and estradiol. Over time, these hormones can accumulate in the body and may eventually create problems.

Safely Take BHRT With Myomin

Supplementation with the above hormones is necessary for those who are deficient. However, Myomin should be added to the regimen to oppose their direct or indirect conversion to estrogen. For instance, many women are using progesterone cream without taking anything else, resulting in problems like cysts and fibroids. Progesterone can be converted to androstenedione, then to testosterone and finally to estradiol through one pathway. With Myomin, those who are taking progesterone would still get the benefits of the hormone but the conversion from testosterone to estradiol is blocked, effectively cutting off the production of the unneeded estradiol and its possible side effects.

This is evident in a case study from Dr. Jonathan Wright. A male patient had low libido due to testosterone deficiency (< 300 ng/dL). Dr. Wright recommended 75 mg daily testosterone therapy. His testosterone level did increase to 645 ng/dL; however, excess aromatization caused his estradiol level to increase to 50.4 pg/mL, which is 20 units over the threshold for males. Dr. Wright immediately added Myomin to his therapy and his estradiol level reduced to 13.3 pg/mL while his testosterone maintained at around 640 ng/dL, still within the normal range.

Dr. Caron reports a case study in which Myomin optimized testosterone levels. A male patient had a low testosterone level (280 ng/dL). After 6 months of taking Myomin, his testosterone level increased to 460 ng/dL.

Symptons of Hyperaromatization by Dr. Jonathan Wright

In Dr. Wright’s case stated above, the increase in estradiol was due to too much conversion of testosterone to estradiol, a condition called hyperaromatization. To correct this, he recommends the “safe and effective” Myomin (Townsend Letter. Jan 2010; 56-58). He also enumerates the typical symptoms associated with hyperaromatization, which leads to low testosterone and excess estrogen, especially in males:

• Overweight (or difficult to lose weight)
• Type 2 Diabetes (high cholesterol, hypertension, insulin resistance)
• Low libido (low testosterone, high estrogen)
• Reduced muscle tone
• Gynecomastia

Those who have these symptoms would do well to beware of their risk of estrogen dominance. The first four symptoms can apply to both men and women. Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the breasts, is a very obvious indication of hyperaromatization, and estrogen dominance, in men. Those who have these symptoms most likely have low testosterone and high estradiol.

Dr. Wright further explains that “hyperaromatization is almost always accompanied by insulin resistance.” This is why those with Type 2 Diabetes can also benefit from taking Myomin. Dr. Wright has stated that about 1/3 of all North American men should be taking Myomin.

Dr. Sanborn has a 16-year-old male patient with gynecomastia. His estradiol and DHT levels were both high. He has tried many supplements with no apparent effect on either the hormone levels or gynecomastia. After taking Myomin for 2 months, his estradiol level reduced from 300 pg/mL to 70 pg/mL and his DHT level reduced from 1,100 pg/dL to 250 pg/dL. His gynecomastia also improved. This case shows that Myomin is indeed useful for men as well.

It is apparent that Myomin’s multiple mechanisms make it beneficial for a variety of conditions. It is especially helpful for individuals on BHRT. Those on testosterone, progesterone and DHEA should add Myomin to their regimen as soon as possible to prevent excess conversion of these hormones to estradiol and estrone and to avoid associated adverse effects that can arise from estrogen dominance.

Holistic Iridology

By: David J. Pesek, Ph.D..

What is iridology (pronounced, eye-ri-dology)? Many people today are talking about how we can see our level of health through looking at our eyes. This brief explanation will serve as an introduction to the art and science of iridology. The science and practice of iridology is performed by analyzing the iris along with the sclera (sometimes referred to as Sclerology) and the pupil.

With regard to human embryology, iris tissue derives from the same embryologic layer as the nervous system: ectoderm. The eyes and thalamus emerge from the same cerebral vesicle: diencephalon. The thalamus works as a major relay and integration station of the information that goes to all areas of the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, hypothalamus and brain stem. It is possible that the eyes (irides) work as an embryologic twin structure to the thalamus.

With respect to human anatomy and physiology, it is important to understand that the ocular structures are innervated by four of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves: 2nd optic, 4th trochlear, 5th trifacial and 6th abducent. Further, the eyes contain the four tissues of the body – epithelium, connective, muscular and nervous – along with the nutritive fluids of blood and lymph.

As sensory organs, the eyes have afferent nerve pathways that carry information to the central nervous system for processing. This information is then sent out via the peripheral nervous system through the efferent nerve pathways to the autonomic nervous system. These nerve impulses innervate the muscles, organs and glands of the body.

The eyes are connected and continuous with the brain’s dura mater through the fibrous sheath of the optic nerves, and they are connected directly with the sympathetic nervous system and spinal cord. The optic tract extends to the thalamus area of the brain. This creates a close association with the hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal glands. These endocrine glands, within the brain, are major control and processing centers for the entire body. Because of this anatomy and physiology, the eyes are in direct contact with the biochemical, hormonal, structural and metabolic processes of the body. This information is recorded in the various structures of the eye, i.e. iris, retina, sclera, cornea, pupil and conjunctiva. Thus, it can be said that the eyes are a reflex or window into the bioenergetics of the physical body and a person’s feelings and thoughts.

Genetic information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses can be interpreted through the connective tissue of the irises, including its structure, pigmentations and accumulations. The patterns of the trabeculas that comprise the visible aspects of the iris are unique to the individual. Health conditions that develop over time can be analyzed by changes in the iris, sclera, cornea, pupil, conjunctiva and retina. These changes in health are a function not of genetics alone but also of the ways a person eats, drinks, feels, thinks, lives and loves.

Iris analysis can uncover hereditary predispositions to degenerative conditions and early pathogenesis decades before symptoms occur or diagnostic testing may reveal. Thus, it is a valuable asset for preventive healthcare.

The science and practice of iridology is not new. The oldest records uncovered thus far have shown that a form of iris interpretation was used in Central Asia (Mesopotamia) as far back as 1,000 BC, nearly 3,000 years ago. This information was found in cuneiform writings on tablets of clay from the time of Chaldea. The Greeks referred to this culture as the cradle of knowledge. Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine” was born in approximately 460 BC in Greece on the island of Kos. It is known that he looked in the eyes of his patients for health information. He said, “Inquiries are to be made and symptoms are to be noted, those in the whole countenance, those on the body and those in the eyes.” He was regarded as the greatest physician of his time. In the Bible, St. Luke writes that Christ said, “The lamp of your body is the eye. When your eyes are sound, you have light for the whole body, but when your eyes are bad, you are in darkness.”

In the year 1670, the physician Philippus Meyens, in his book, Physiognomia Medica, described the division of the iris according to organ regions of the body. The Viennese ophthalmologist, George Joseph Beer (1763-1821), did not know of these old views on iris analysis. Yet, in his 1813 publication, Textbook of Eye Diseases, he wrote, “Everything that affects the organism of an individual cannot remain without effect on the eye and vice versa.”

A Hungarian, Dr. med. Ignaz Péczely (1822-1911), published a book in 1880 titled, Discovery in Natural History and Medical Science, a Guide to the Study and Diagnosis from the Eye. This book achieved an international renown and he is considered the renaissance father of iridology.

During the first half of the 20th century, iridiagnosis (as it was called then) was utilized here in the USA primarily by medical doctors. The following is a quote from Henry Lindlahr, M.D. circa 1919. “The ‘regular’ school of medicine (allopathic), as a body, has ignored and will ignore this science (of iridology), because it discloses the fallacy of their favorite theories and practices and because it reveals unmistakable the direful results of chronic drug poisoning (pharmaceuticals) and ill advised operations.”

The topographic map of the irises has representation and location for all the structures of the body. This map or chart bears a correlation to the embryological development of the human fetus.

Due to increasing political and economic pressure upon medical schools by the emerging pharmaceutical industry, the teaching of iridology was removed from the curriculum. Eventually this art and science was lost within the allopathic medical practice. However, it was kept alive by naturopathic physicians in the latter half of the 20th century. Most notably, Bernard Jensen, D.C., N.D., Ph.D. of the U.S.A. was the champion of this valuable tool of assessment until his passing at 93 years of age. Also of significant import were two of Dr. Jensen’s contemporaries who were Heilpraktikers, Hp. Josef Deck and Hp. Josef Angerer of Germany. Today, iridology is practiced worldwide, and in Europe it has been used clinically for generations.

Research has shown that emotions have undeniable effects on the many different systems that comprise the human body. They are subordinated to a variety of mental processes in which they depend upon the individual’s unique perceptions to take on their characteristics.

An individual’s capacity to develop perceptions can be related, in part, to heredity and can be identified at birth by observing various genetic signs in the iris, sclera and pupil. While other, phenotypic, signs develop over time as a function of perceptions and resultant emotions.

An advanced system of iris analysis that I have researched and developed, called Holistic Iridology®, includes and goes beyond the traditional physical assessment. Through this leading edge system it is possible to understand the “whole” person. Mental, emotional and spiritual aspects can also be interpreted along with the physical.

Each eye gives us different information. The left eye correlates with the left side of our body, which is that feminine, creative, conceptual and intuitive side of us. The right eye correlates to the right side of our body, which is that masculine, analytical, linear and practical side of us.

By being made aware of their conscious and subconscious thought and emotional behavior patterns and influences of genetic (DNA) memory, beyond just physical characteristics, individuals are able to understand the origins of their conditions and afflictions, enabling them to positively transform their lives on all levels. Thus, Holistic Iridology® is an excellent tool of analysis for prevention of illness and disease at the root causes, thoughts and feelings. In many cases, conditions can be detected 30 years or more prior to symptoms of poor health or clinical evaluations showing imbalance or disease. A high-risk area in the body can actually be observed in an infant. Thus, it is possible to assess potential pathogenesis decades before onset from a holistic perspective.

It is important to note that Holistic Iridology® is not used for diagnosis. Rather, it is used as a means of assessment for conditions and levels of health. Proper clinical terminology for iridology or iris analysis is as follows: genetic and systemic assessment through external ophthalmic examination.

Iridology provides a painless, economical and non-invasive means of assessing health status. It may be utilized in conjunction with any other system of analysis or diagnostic procedure available. Today, people are in need of preventive healthcare and less complex methods of analyzing their condition. Iridology is the key to both of these situations.

Iris analysis is most effectively done by imaging both eyes with a specialized microscope and digital camera. The pictures are then enlarged and carefully examined by a qualified iridologist who possesses the highest skills and standards. The iridologist should be certified through the International Institute of Iridology® in Holistic Iridology®. This advanced approach to iris analysis, which is now being used worldwide, encompasses various systems that are integrated into a truly holistic model.

The eyes are the bridge between the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects of our human nature. This 3,000 year old art and science may seem new and different to you. I encourage you to be open-minded and explore the possibilities.

The eyes have been proclaimed through the ages as the “windows of the soul” and now we acknowledge them as the window to the physical, emotional and mental characteristics as well.

Transdermal Infusion
The Health of the Future

By: Michael Tick, PhD, ND, FACMT

About the Institute for Skin Sciences

ISS is a thirty-five year old private Skin research facility based in the United States. Originally created for the purpose of defining, diagnosing and treating Skin diseases, problems and conditions, the Institute became aware, shortly into its ‘mission’, that the Skin was much more than just the largest organ of the body. We noted that while both the medical and scientific communities had previously mutually agreed that dealing with the Skin was a ‘one-way street’, our experimentation seemed to prove otherwise. With this new-found knowledge, the Institute changed its focus, and for the last twenty years has specialized in using the Skin to promote different health protocols. The Institute for Skin Sciences is now considered to be the pioneer of Transdermal Infusion.

What is Transdermal Infusion?

From the earliest medical practitioners, to Hippocrates, to the scientists of the 19th century, it was always believed that all internal organs of the body could in some way effect/influence the Skin, but that the reverse was not true. In other words, applying a topical product for the purposes of penetrating the various layers of the Skin was not possible. In fact, the theory, put in lay terms, argued that if the Skin allowed penetration, then a person would drown in a swimming pool or a bathtub or the ocean. The inference here is that because no drowning occurred merely from submersing one’s body, the Skin obviously prevented absorption. The Institute for Skin Science, and its Laboratory Director, Dr. Michael Tick, has been studying, researching and testing this concept for years. Their diligence and persistence has been rewarded with a new protocol for diagnosis, treatment and medication infusion.

This new health concept has been named Transdermal Infusion. It involves the preparation of topical agents, all of which are natural botanicals and herbs. Using such other modalities as Ph balancing science, naturally occurring diffusion factors and advanced technological manufacturing processes, the protocols were formulated and developed to work with the Skin by applying topical creams, lotions, gels, etc. which would penetrate through all layers to the inner body.

Thus, the active ingredients can be infused through the Skin to allow the inner body to self-repair. To date, this process has been used on thousands of human research subjects, and boasts a track record of 75% success.

Considering the severity of the cases involved, which included heart attacks, strokes, cancer, liver, kidney, lung, arthritis and many other illnesses, Transdermal Infusion is most definitely the ‘delivery’ system of the future.

It is important to note here that the Skin itself does not have or offer and curing, healing, preventative, and/or remission abilities. This Skin is being used simply as a ‘vehicle’ to get required protocols from the outside world to the inside of the body where a self-repair mechanism can be initiated. It replaces an IV, a pill, a surgeon’s scalpel and even radiation. It is this ability to penetrate through all layers of the Skin to the inside of the body that makes Transdermal Infusion so special.

What is the Future using Transdermal Infusion?

Currently, the majority of the development of this highly effective protocol is channeled towards the major diseases facing modern day society. However, recent developments in improved penetration speed have allowed us to pursue more ‘everyday’ chronic situations. To date, we have formulated topical end-user products for out-of-balance hormones, stress-related problems, eyelash regrowth, vaginal re-lubrication and candida/yeast/fungus of the vaginal tract, natural botox replacement, mole/wart/skin tag remover, and a non-surgical face lift. At this time, our laboratory is working on a ‘headache’ cream, a ‘stomach-ache’ cream and a one-a-day multi-vitamin cream. Years down the road, we will experiment with a ‘substance-abuse’ cream.

The current health ‘craze’ is one of anti-aging. The dictionary definition of ‘anti’ is “to stop, to prevent, or to reverse”. When applied to the aging process, it would mean to stop, or prevent, or even to reverse aging. That is impossible! The only way not to age is to die. The new theory in the evolution of healthcare is one of ‘successful aging’. We know we are going to get older, but we are more in control of the circumstances that affect our health. Such everyday functions as diet/nutrition, exercise, sleep, prayer, and meditation can influence our future health.

So too, can Transdermal Infusion. The pharmaceutical industry is approaching the aging phenomenon using ‘pills’. As the science of the human body mixes with improved technology, so do the number of different pills available for just about any problem of the human body. Unfortunately, everything that goes into the mouth and swallowed, winds up in the liver. Over a period of time, the liver can become toxic from unnatural substances such as the synthetics and chemicals found in the proprietary pills marketed by the pharmaceutical companies. A toxic liver can lead to many internal and external problems such as constipation, urinary tract infections, chronic tiredness and lethargy, depression, arthritis, bacterial viruses, hepatitis, and so on. With the arrival of Transdermal Infusion comes the knowledge that most of the traditional medications offered today in the form of pills will be replaced with a simple cream or lotion. Already, the ‘patch’ has replaced the meds previously used for seasickness, smoking cessation, and hormonal imbalance.

Is Transdermal Infusion Only About Penetration?

Up until a few years ago, the answer was “yes”. However, with all the recent developments, and the accumulation of new knowledge, the answer is now a definitive “no”. This phenomenon is due in no small part to the re-discovered, often-abused, rarely-respected organ named the SKIN. Only through repeated forays into each individual layer of the Skin have we been able to learn the intricacies and mechanisms of reaction. Years of experimentation studying the various geographical areas of the Skin that have been ‘influenced’ (either positively or negatively) by internal organs have already led us to another use for Transdermal Infusion.

The Skin, together with Transdermal Infusion, is now being used as a diagnostic tool to determine areas of illnesses and disease within internal organs. Using the combined knowledge of penetration together with the results of testing the specifically designated areas of the Skin that are targeted by internal organs as a manifestation of internal problems, we are able to interpret, with a reasonable amount of accuracy, the area and severity of the health issue. By applying known natural botanicals and herbs to specific areas of the Skin and then studying the amount and time of penetration, we are able to analyze internal irregularities. At the same time, this same process already allows us to start the formulation of a topical protocol based on the Skin’s ability and willingness to absorb certain of these testing variables. Each tested area of the Skin can reveal, either through edema, erythema and/or percentage of penetration, an underlying health problem that may be too small or insignificant for the standard medical analytical tools such as X-rays, EKG’s and blood work.

Transdermal Infusion is an effective and accurate means of identifying health problems, many times before they become major issues.

Transdermal Infusion is a safe and effective method of transporting necessary protocols through the Skin to the health concerns internally. Unlike all the ‘side-effects’ emanating from the use of allopathic procedures and medications such as pills, radiation, surgery, etc., such negative reactions are virtually non-existent with this new health evolution.

Transdermal Infusion will be an inexpensive, but highly effective method of providing quality healthcare access to all people.
