I Have Seen It All & I Have Seen Enough! Tai Chi & Tennis - The Supreme Ultimate! In Loving Memory of Dr. George E. Schuchard III Body-Mind (Bio-Neuro) Technology ANMA 2010 Convention & Lecture Schedule Be a Sculptor, Make a Difference
The President's Corner
By: Mary Dunlap, N.D. for Dr. Donald Hayhurst ANMA is proud to announce its 29th annual educational convention. This event is always well attended and successfully brings together members, ANMA officers and board of directors, including merchants and other interested parties. In our effort to constantly improve, we will have many exhibitors with the very latest products for your practice. The main purpose for each annual convention is to offer continuing educational credits by presenting current updated health information to enhance your knowledge and practice abilities. This year the ANMA convention will be held July 23, 24, 25, 2010 at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. In past years there have been many discussions involving legislation, scope of practice rights, and qualifications necessary for such practice. This year the ANMA convention is no less important. Many changes nationwide are taking place in the naturopathic profession, and it’s imperative that you as a member be involved. This is an opportunity for the membership to voice opinions and suggestions to be discussed and considered. Sunday will also include CPR certification for ANMA attendees provided by the American Heart Association. This is an opportunity to gain CPR certification, or to renew your certification as required every two years. If you haven’t already made your plans to attend the convention, you should do it today. ANMA Board of Directors will be there to meet each and everyone of you. See you soon! For more information about the ANMA convention, please read pages 10 - 12 of this publication. Regarding legislation, this year ANMA was successful in defeating restrictive legislation, HB784, in Virginia again. Don’t expect the assaults to stop. Virginia like Texas & Colorado have had numerous bills defeated in the last ten years. Keeping a watchful eye on North Carolina and Illinois. ANMA has heard about some committees forming to do studies in those states. We will stay on top of it and keep you informed. We highly recommend you maintain an active interest in your future. Non-involvement and non-interest in trade conventions and tracking legislation in your state can be disastrous to your practice. We recommend the web site www.statelocalgov.net to monitor such bills. Once you are familiar with the site, it takes only a few moments of your time daily to protect your right to practice. If you have any questions please contact us at 702-897-7053 or via email at admin@anma.org. Sadly, a few months ago ANMA and the naturopathic profession lost a dear friend and supporter. Although Dr. Schuchard was the president of ANMA for a short time, he was a longtime friend of Dr. Donald Hayhurst and member of ANMA for over 20 years. He had a vision for the association that we will aspire to. It is with great sadness that ANMA says good bye. You will be dearly missed. Lastly, I would like to thank all those supporters who contribute regularly increasing the ability of ANMA to be active in ongoing legislation. ANMA has played a major part in defending the rights of the Naturopathic profession for the past 29 years.
I Have Seen It All And By: Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph “GREAT SPIRITS HAVE ALWAYS ENCOUNTERED VIOLENT OPPOSITION, FROM MEDIOCRE MINDS”. Albert Einstein "If we doctors threw all our medicines into the sea, it would be that much better for our patients and that much worse for the fishes." Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, MD I have seen the foolishness of the medical profession with their conventional wisdom as it pertains to only disease care. I have seen the hospital feed pork chops, French fries and a glass of milk to a patient with liver cancer and "Jell-O" as a snack and Kool-Aid to drink to a patient with leukemia. I see all of the local grammar schools feed garbage lunches full of sugar, white bread, and fried foods to young kids who then can’t sit still for more than five minutes. I have seen those same children line up later at the school nurse’s office for hyperactivity drugs, and we wonder ‘what’s wrong with those kids’, I have seen enough. I worked, as a consultant to a group of psychiatrists, who thought it was OK to let a patient go 28 days without a bowel movement and told it was OK and even normal for some people! He was being treated for depression, I looked at those psychiatrists and said, “you people are crazy, anyone not having a bowl movement for 28 days would be depressed”. They told me, “I was anally fixated and the constipation had nothing to do with the depression”. I have seen patients who were told that they have six months to live when they actually lived sixty months. I have seen people recover from serious illness only to have their physician yell, scream and embarrass them for having used natural healing methods to do so. I have seen infants spit up cow milk formula while their mothers were advised not to breast-feed. I have seen better ingredients in dog and cat food than in the average school or hospital lunch. I have seen enough! One of the most dangerous weapons in the world is the table fork. Don't bother looking in the history books for what has killed the most Americans. Look, instead, at your breakfast, lunch, and dinner table. There's an old saying: "One fourth of what you eat keeps you alive, the other three fourths keep your doctor alive." We eat too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. Do you know anyone that eats the government standard of 9 to 11 servings of fruit and vegetables per day? Scientific research has now confirmed that there is rampant nationwide vitamin and mineral deficiencies in all age groups. We spend over one trillion dollars each year on disease care in America and almost nothing on prevention. Is it any wonder we are the fattest nation on earth. I have seen doctors spend 5 minutes with their patients give them a prescription, send them on there way and do it 50 time in a day. Is it any surprise that doctors consistently place among the very highest per capita income levels in the country and the citizens of this country are some of the unhealthiest in the world? I have seen enough! "And we have made of ourselves living cesspools, and driven doctors to invent names for our diseases." Plato About 55 thousand U.S. soldiers were killed in the Vietnam War, having faced an enemy armed with machine guns and hand grenades. The horrific slaughter of this war went on for years. Yet, the medical profession kills hundreds of thousands of patients per year just from prescription drugs and unnecessary procedures. That’s enough people to fill 2 to 4 jumbo jets, dying every day. I have seen enough! During all of the American Wars, in which millions of soldiers died, three times as many soldiers died from infections and disease as from battle. Today, alcohol, tobacco and junk food kill nearly as many Americans in one year as the Wars. Today, we lose more than a million Americans each year to cancer and heart disease. These are staggering statistics. So know that disease is the real enemy and most of the time it is self-induced. Results are all that matter. Naturopathic and Alternative medicine works. The results from the natural treatment of most illness are accomplished safely, inexpensively, and effectively. We have all been taught that safe inexpensive herbs, vitamins and minerals, cannot possibly be truly effective against "real diseases." We have all been taught to trust and believe in the “doctors’ they know best, it is time to stop this nonsense and to see for yourself what really works. My work does not involve only taking a prescription. It involves education, description and information. The only thing that counter-acts ignorance is knowledge. We are a free people and it is important for us to be free to decide to utilize any reasonable health care approach that we deem viable. To make an educated decision, we need more education. Natural healing is not about avoiding doctors. It is about not needing to go to doctors in the first place. To follow a proper lifestyle is to prevent disease. A dentist is not upset when you are cavity-free. A Naturopathic doctor is not upset when you are healthy they are excited, yet the medical system thrives on sickness and disease to continue. The whole idea is to be healthy. The first step must be in the desire to want to be healthy. The old Chinese saying is "When you are sick of sickness, you are no longer sick." That is the start to wellness. Naturopathy is the only profession that teaches the clients to need you less and less. Do something to improve your health. Each of us is ultimately responsible for our own health and wellness and we need leave nothing unturned in our search for how to have better health. I believe that you get out of your body what you put into it. Your body will respond to your efforts to improve your health. It is up to you and no one else, you are responsible for how you live. The only thing that gets rid of the ignorance about what your body needs and how to live healthfully is knowledge and that takes effort, effort that you must put in. Each treatment program I utilize in my practice is not exclusively mine. I do not stay up late at night making all this up. Most of the ideas are not original; they are generally not new, either. They are a culmination of all the work of all the early pioneers in the Naturopathic and Alternative health field. This is the foundation upon which I continue to build in my practice. I invite all of you, both practitioners and laypeople, to take advantage of my radio show and my website, www.naturalsolutionsradio.com. I have collected, and continue to collect, the safest and most effective healing approaches that I can find from physicians worldwide. There are now 27,000 articles on all aspects of natural health that have been posted on the site. I hope you find them to be as helpful as they have been for my listening audience, my patients and my family. The time to start is right now. Another old saying: "If not now, when? If not here, where? If not you, then who?" “THE DOCTOR OF THE FUTURE WILL GIVE NO MEDICINE, YET WILL INTEREST HIS PATIENTS IN THE CARE OF THE HUMAN FRAME, IN DIET, AND THE CAUSE AND PREVENTION OF DISEASE”. Thomas Edison
Tai Chi & Tennis By:
Allen W. Jang, Ph.D., N.D. student (Trinity College of Natural Health) ABSTRACT: A “double-blind” study was conducted in 2007 exploring the efficacy of Tai Chi (TC)/Sotai (ST) movement type warm-ups compared to popular “Static Stretches” (SS) in promoting greater tennis stroking efficiency among novice or intermediate learners. A total of 31 high school students were assigned to two groups comparable in terms of age and self—reported tennis skill level, and either exposed to TC/ST warm-ups or SS. The students then went to the tennis court where they were instructed to return balls shot out of a ball machine set at a set speed and angle. A record was made of the number of good hits defined as hits kept in-bound. Two days later, the students were reassembled for a second trial to be exposed to the other form of warm-ups. Scores were compared to see which form of warm-ups given after the subjects were familiar with the task would yield a greater improvement in performance. Then students were tested on ability to sustain a rally against a back-board. The results of these studies show that warm-ups employing TC/ST movements showed significant improved stroking efficiency over traditional SS. HYPOTHESIS: “Tai Chi/So-Tai” type movement exercises as a pre-event warm-up facilitates improved tennis stroking and can lead to a higher accuracy of control hits than “static” stretching. INTRODUCTION: At Andre Agassi’s farewell performance at the July 2006 Country-wide ATP Tournament at UCLA, I watched the tennis legend warming up by stroking in the air with his hands, strikingly reminiscent of a Tai Chi Shadow Boxer. Then he picked up his racquet and continued to swing against an imaginary opponent. He went on to score an exciting victory against his real opponent, George Bastl of Switzerland, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. The words Tai Chi Chuan means “Supreme Ultimate Fist” and it is so because unlike any other martial arts, it is perhaps the most wholistic in relating the mental, spiritual, and physical aspects for practitioners of all ages, from young children to senior citizens. In addition So-Tai is the 20th century Japanese therapeutic move-ment exercises developed by Keizo Hashimoto, M.D. (emphasizing bilateral balancing movements). My involvement with Tai Chi began 30 years ago after I experienced its healing powers while recovering from a partially torn Achilles tendon suffered from a bad fall while playing basketball. The Chinese doctor recommended Tai Chi as therapy. I trained in Tai Chi martial arts at Ananda Temple in Los Angeles and later became certified as a Tai Chi for Arthritis and Tai Chi for Diabetes instructor under Sifu Paul Lam, M.D., and in Cardio Tai Chi by Sifu Chi-Hsiu Wang, Ph.D., a professor at San Jose State University and the University of East West Medicine. Self-defense and health, that’s what Tai Chi is all about, but tennis? The relationship between Tai Chi and tennis should be obvious. Tennis is the “Supreme Ultimate” of sports because it also encompasses wholistically the mental, spiritual, and physical aspects for players of all ages (see Michael Zosel, a Tai Chi practitioner, Vision Tennis. Diamond Communications, 1994). From young to senior citizens, tennis is often referred to as the “game of life.” A recent survey showed that the three largest age groups of tennis players were those in their teens, early to mid-twenties, and those in their mid-fifties to mid-sixties (The Profit in Racquets, Fitness Business Pro, 2003, http://fitnessbusinesspro.com/mag/fitness_profit_racquets/). Both Tai Chi martial arts and tennis employs speed, quick pivoting, strikes and blows (e.g., the “punch” volley), side-stepping a direct hit, and strategy in pursuit of a moving object. Although I was a Tai Chi instructor and a high school tennis coach, I didn’t realize how beneficial Tai Chi could be to tennis until I met Desmond Oon, a former top Singapore National Singles player, Singapore Davis Cup coach, and the only Asian ever accorded the title of “Master Professional” by the USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association). Dr. Oon was perhaps the first to originate the concept of Tai Chi Tennis (see Oon, Desmond. “Can Eastern Wisdom Improve Your Tennis? You Bet!” available through USPTA Bookstore). I obtained tutelage under him during the summer of 2004 in “Eastern Wisdom” and sports psychology and the application of Tai Chi for improving tennis. As we were sipping tea in his living room, Dr. Oon, who has lectured on such topics as Achieving fluid stroke production through Tai Chi at the USPTA World Conference on Tennis, commented that Roger Federer had the most fluid Tai Chi type motions of any of the professional players. Oon had predicted the year before that Federer would eventually achieve #1 world ranking. Six months later, Roger finally climbed to that pinnacle of recognition which Oon had predicted! Roger Federer was compared with Andre Agassi in an article entitled “Federer, the New Zen Master” (the “old” one being Agassi) in the 2/1/04 eNewsletter TennisOne; tennisone.com. According to author Kim Shanley, “Federer's mastery, beyond being able to hit all shots and angles, combines a number of intangible factors, including fluid strokes with little mental interference, genius in constructing points, seamless transitions between defense to offense, an intuitive understanding of his opponent's options and likely response, and a clear, calm mind that executes instantly. In short, all the attributes of a Zen master playing tennis (….the paradoxical striving and letting-go required in superior athletic performance.…is based on the philosophy of Tao ("Way")” which is the foundation of Tai Chi! TAI CHI A BETTER WAY? The popular opinion among most athletes is that stretching prior to play will improve performance and decrease risks of injury. So tennis players grunt and groan, pushing against the fence or the net post and holding various static stretches (SS; stretching to the point of muscle tension and holding it) for counts of 30. Research in modern sports medicine, however, has shown that “dynamic” stretches and warm-up routines such as Tai Chi or So-Tai may be a better way to prepare for a match. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN In order to test out the hypothesis on the effectiveness of Tai Chi exercises for enhancing coordinated tennis learning and functioning, 31 high school students who had no training or practices in Tai Chi or in tennis (most were my new Advanced Placement Biology students for the fall school year) to participate in this research project. In order to maintain a “single blind” control over the experimental design, none of these students had been told what was the hypothesis being tested, what they were going to be exposed to (except that it should take about 15-20 minutes and would involve hitting some tennis balls), and they were instructed not to discuss any procedural activities or practice any tennis during the period of study. Participants were asked to complete a standard instrument used in tennis for self-evaluation, the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). The students were divided into two comparable study groups. One group would start off by undergoing static stretches (e.g., hurdler’s stretch, toe-touches, lunges, cross-arm stretch, etc.) and following it up two days later with Tai Chi and So-tai movements (e.g., Wave Hands in the Clouds, Part the Horse’s Mane, Press Forward, High Pat the Horse, Brush Knee, etc.) as a warm-up activity. The other group would start off with Tai Chi warm-ups and follow up two days later with static stretching as a warm- up routine. Students were instructed to dress comparably on both days and students who did not have a racquet all used the identical loaner racket for both trials. [NOTE: I learned So-Tai natural exercises this year from Dr. Frank Yurasek, N.M.D., who is also a Tai Chi instructor. I realized that although I didn’t call it So-Tai in 2007, it was indeed So-Tai exercises that I had been giving as a warm-up along with traditional Tai Chi.] TRIAL 1 with BALL MACHINE Step 2. After completing Step 1, the groups would be sent to Station 2 (a “waiting” station), which was out-of-sight of Station 1 and the tennis court testing site, designated Station 3. A volunteer worker monitored the students to ensure they did not practice any additional warm-ups while waiting to be called up to Step 3 and did not discuss any research-related matters with the incoming or outgoing groups. Step 3. At Station 3 (a tennis court out of view of Stations 1 & 2), students one-at-a-time, were given instructions by assistant Cindy Nam to hit the balls shot out by a freshly-charged Tennis Tutor, Jr. ball machine so that the balls will stay within the in-bound lines (the ball machine was placed at the center of the base-line at speed setting #4, out of a possible 10 speed settings, non-oscillating, at a comfortable preset angle of delivery). Cindy did not tell the students that she was only going to count hits #4-28 (i.e. 25 hits), which she did silently to herself with Caroline Koan “double-checking” and verifying Cindy’s count. (If we counted more than 25 hits, it may tend to be more reflective of the effects of adjusting to the repetitious firing of the ball machine rather than reflective of the pre-event warm-ups). The number of good “hits” was recorded. TRIAL 2 with BALL MACHINE TRIAL 3 with BACKBOARD CONTROL MEASURES For the ball-machine study, students were tested individually away from the view of any other students so they would not feel embarrassed if they experienced any difficulties in returning the balls. AFTER the trials were completed, all the participants were asked to sign or email an affidavit attesting that they attempted all the trials in good faith. For example, “I swear that I did not deliberately ‘mess up’ in swinging the racquets and that I swung at the balls in reasonably good faith. In other words, the data collected is fairly reliable/valid for whatever its intended purpose.” To have a “double-blind” control of this research, I remained in Station 1, different volunteers stayed in Station 2, and Cindy and Caroline, in Station 3, were both out-of-sight of the warm-up area and neither knew which students were given a “Static Stretch” routine or a Tai Chi warm-up first for either trials 1 or 2 until after the trials were completed. For the Back-Board trials, there were three counters, two of whom also served as timers, at Station 4. The counters had no knowledge as to whether or not a student sent in had just been given a TC/ST or SS warm-up from me in Station 1. SUMMARY ANALYSIS: There are 3 sets of corroborative data in this research: 1. Comparing the stroking accuracy against a ball machine of those who had 10 minutes of TC/ST warm-ups with those who had 10 minutes of SS prior to Trial 1. 2. Comparing the improvements in stroking performance against a ball machine of those who were first given TC/ST warm-ups then given SS with those who were first given SS then given TC/ST warm-ups prior to Trial 2. 3. Comparing stroking performance against a back board of those who had 5 min. of TC warm-ups compared to those who had 5 min. of SS prior to testing. For the Oon Hypothesis to be supported, (1) the Trial 1 scores for the TC/ST warm-ups must be higher compared to SS warm-ups when first administered; (2) the Trial 2 scores, examining the “practice effect” or “task familiarity” factor, will show a greater improvement for the group that was first given SS then given a TC/ST warm-up compared to the TC/ST first group which was later given SS, and (3) those given TC/ST warm-ups should show significantly greater control as determined by the number of good “hits” made against a back-board. The results from all three sets of data clearly show that Tai Chi/So-Tai style warm-ups are more effective as a pre-event exercise regiment for developing accurate tennis stroking for novice and intermediate learners and players than the traditional “Western” stretching regiment that is commonly employed by many athletes and taught by coaches. Without the benefit of any pre-trial practice on the ball machine, those who were given a Tai Chi/So-Tai warm-up performed significantly better on both Trials 1 and 2 than those who had an equivalent amount of Static Stretching. With the benefit of a 30 second trial practice on the backboard, since the backboard experiment requires greater control since each hit has an effect on a subject’s ability to make good subsequent hits, those who were given a Tai Chi/So-Tai warm-up performed significantly better than those who had an equivalent amount of Static Stretching. None of these subjects had any prior training in Tai Chi or So-Tai. THE SCIENCE OF STRETCHING Traditional static stretches lengthen muscles and increase their flexibility. But studies have shown that it will lead to a substantial decrease in muscular strength (5-30%), reflex time, a less-than-normal “feel” and consequent decrease in performance, according to Dr. Jeff Chandler, associate professor of exercise science and sport at Marshall University in West Virginia (Milano, S. Fitness: Stretching: The Truth: Tennis, May 2003; Kokkonen J, Nelson AG, and Cornwell A. Acute muscle stretching inhibits maximal strength performance. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport 1998;69:411-415). Studies by Dr. Ben Kibler, who founded the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science, and others show that static stretching can cause decreases in muscle performance for 20 minutes up to an hour (Milano, S. Tennis; Fowles JR, Sale DG, and MacDougall JD. Reduced strength after passive stretch of the human plantar flexors. Journal of Applied Physiology 2000; 89:1179-1188). This decrease in performance due to stretching has been consistently observed even when subjects expected improved performance (a reverse placebo effect). What about the claim that stretching reduces the risk of injuries? Well, contrary to popular opinions, there is little clinical evidence to show that stretching prior to physical activity like tennis decreases the risk of injuries (Shrier I. Stretching before exercise does not reduce the risk of local muscle injury: a critical review of the clinical and basic science literature. Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine 1999; 9:221-227). Static stretches, according to Kibler, are best done immediately after tennis play is over, when your blood is flowing and your muscles aren’t tight. This will help decrease post-play soreness. STRETCHING & TENNIS SERVES A recent study conducted by Dr. Duane Knudson, Dept. of Physical Education and Exercise Science, California State University, Chico, studied the effects of static stretching on tennis first serve speed and accuracy on players of different gender and skill levels (Knudson et al., Stretching has no effect on tennis serve performance. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research). No observable benefits from stretching prior to serving were noted. TAI CHI/SO-TAI BENEFITS: CONCLUSION The key to sports warm-ups is to get your muscles moving the way they will be used during the activity. The best way to do this is with dynamic stretches that mimic the movements of the activity, good footwork and putting your body through a full range of motions. Although a short-form Tai Chi set may be suitable as a warm-up (e.g., Manny Fuentes and the American College of Sports Medicine’s “Simplified Yang Short Form” in Tai Chi for Dummies), it may be easier to have students learn to perform repetitions of Wave Hands in the Clouds, Brush Knees, Press Forward, Part the Horse’s Mane, etc. The trend in sports medicine in recent years is the elimination of static stretching prior to sports activity but utilizing it effectively as a post-event cool-down. Dr. Allen Wai Jang, who teaches biology and tennis at Gabrielino High School and Tai Chi for the West San Gabriel Valley YMCA, was selected by the Southern California Tennis Association as their 2006 Commissioner of the Year. Appreciation is expressed to wife Loan Jang for her encouragement in Tai Chi, god-daughter Cindy Nam who served as Jang’s tennis aide and helped shaped this research, and helpers Caroline Koan, May Fu, Samantha Phung, and Kathleen Tan.
In Loving Memory On February 3rd, 2010, ANMA and the rest of the Natural Healthcare Profession lost a dear friend and leader. Dr. George Ernest Schuchard III, 64, passed away from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born in Upland, California, August 6th, 1945. His dad was German; his mother Scandinavian and English. When George was in 9th grade, his dad told him he was going to be a dentist or homeless, thereby putting an end to his thoughts of veterinary medicine. George graduated from Chino High School 2nd in his class and graduated with honors at USC. It was his desire to go as far as he could in dentistry, to become a world-class dentist. Before he graduated, he was already developing and selling teaching aides on how the bite worked. George got involved with the Southern CA Academy of Nutritional Research at the time of his graduation. He found when nutrition is inadequate, the heart and teeth degrade. This was his first foray into nutrition, at age 23. He then got involved with the Int. College of Applied Nutrition and was deeply impacted by the book “Applied Nutrition” by Harold Hawkins. George felt dental school intentionally ignored nutrition as a modality, directing students to pharmaceuticals. George realized nutrition wasn’t always enough to overcome problems he encountered. That’s when he started focusing on energy medicine which led to his investigations of over 30 gems he used in his energy work, mostly man-made rubies, garnets, tourmalines, and sapphires, along with health-oriented cutting of these stones. He used 5-15 gems in the teeth, along with rings, pendants, and gem vials. Twenty years ago, George became an NMD and a member of the American Naturopathic Medical Association. He said his greatest honor was becoming President of ANMA last year. It is with great sadness that ANMA says good bye to our friend, our longtime supporter, our President. You will be dearly missed. There has been a foundation established to preserve Dr. George Schuchard’s life work. Please visit the website, www.georgeschuchard.org for more information.
Body-Mind (Bio-Neuro) Technology By: Neville W. Cramer, M.D., (M.A.), H.H.D.,D.Ac. When first introduced to the primitive electronic technology that has developed into the now computer-linked Body-Mind technology, the concept penny dropped, when I conceived the thought that this technology was probably accessing the sub-conscious or super-conscious part of the human brain. That part of the brain which controls the seemingly automatic monitoring and adjusting of the physical body functions, such as temperature, blood pressure, chemistry, circulation, cell production, hormone levels, PH levels etc. and a great variety of other operational parameters. Consider now with me the truth discovered, that our human body bio-systems contain an immense amount of intrinsic information, of which, the conscious mind is seemingly unaware. Just imagine the storehouse of knowledge available if we could access this level of the sub-conscious intelligence and work with that part to optimize the function of our physical bodies. The physical body has been compared in recent years to the hardware and software of artificial intelligence, strikingly similar because patterns of operation were in fact copied from the far superior model of the human body by human intelligence. Consider with me the great superiority of the human bio-system which unlike the artificial intelligence of the finest computers cannot only sense the problems of the physical body, through the sub-conscious Body-Mind intelligence but, on an ongoing basis perform remedial action within the physical body to repair or restore near optimum conditions over many years, unlike most of our artificial intelligences and or automotive devices. Observe how the human bio-system repairs wounds of the skin and muscle tissue as a matter of course, automatically. It knits bones when broken and so on by the Body-Mind processes as described. BIO-NEURO COMMUNICATION Consider again the potential benefits of accessing that super-conscious part of the human Body-Mind and obtaining meaningful readout from that store of intrinsic knowledge which the Body-Mind is using internally on a regular basis. This Body-Mind technology was researched and developed as a computer-linked communication device, enabling operators to access the sub-conscious part of the Body-Mind in order to obtain a readout of current conditions within the various bio-systems such as Heart, Lungs, Lymphatics, Endocrine, Nervous system, Liver, Kydneys etc. These responses accessed may then be recorded with the help of the computer in graphic form for use in the treatment of the human condition which is often stressed because of poor nutrition, bad lifestyle, polluted environment etc. This Body-Mind communication technology takes the process another step further in automated question asking protocols. The Body-Mind technology contains coded virtual lists of over 100,000 software formulated items which the Body-Mind intelligence may be observed to recognize and respond to, via the stress/resistance digital readout of the instrumentation. For instance, it has the capacity to ask the question “What is your Mind-Body response to bee-sting (Apis Mellifica)” or “Cat Hair” etc. and then record the stimulus response accordingly in graphic form. We choose to characterize the Body-Mind technology as a communication device which shows the Body-Mind responses to stress levels within the different bio-systems and also the responses to various remedies which aid the return to optimum health for the individual patient. At the crux of this matter it is important never to forget that the Body-Mind technology protocol is firstly, a communication with a highly intelligent living organism, not simply performing a stress measurement via an intervening computer. There is also an implied linguistic within the Body-Mind technology protocol, which indicates that a normal or optimum response from the Body-Mind is shown via a steady mid-range measurement (45-55), whereas a high measurement response (56-100) indicates an acute/inflammatory condition and a low measurement response (1-44) indicates a chronic degenerative condition. The Body-Mind intelligence responds with the following set of words: We are very familiar today, with the verbal linguistic that we use for writing and conversation (English, Spanish etc.) We are however, far less familiar or aware of our Body-Mind’s use of symbolic, tactile, olfactory, kinesthetic, chemical and electro-magnetic codes in processing information on a daily basis. We have come to recognize that this repertoire of information processing protocols or codes used within, are part of our conversation with the super-conscious Body-Mind. It logically seems very easy to assume that the Body-Mind in addition to controlling factors at a bio-systems level is also working further down at a cellular level, and still deeper perhaps at a spiritual level. Many of the analyses done in clinical laboratories are attempting to make extrinsic some of the information that the sub-conscious Body-Mind intrinsically knows already. They use quantitative tests to insert numbers to parameters so we can process that information with our conscious “left brains”. (numbers of platelets, white blood cells, hormone levels, etc.) DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUMENTATION Generally devices that process data through some decision type algorithm, based on input data are “diagnostic” instruments. In some cases a pure measurement device may also be a critical part of a diagnostic process. For example, a thermometer that quantifies the information (temperature) from the body being measured, for the purpose of placing in a model and to diagnose the human condition, may be termed a “diagnostic instrument”. The interpretation being done by an external party (physician, operator) and the diagnosis is dependent on the quantitative value from the measuring instrument. On the other hand, when qualitative judgment is being assessed by an individual who asks, “How is your lower back feeling today?” response from the other person “It feels fine today!” The judgment formed by the first person is pure communication even if there is an additional device involved (telephone, fax or computer etc.). The intervening device is not a part of the diagnostic process it is merely the communication channel which conveys the information from one to another. Assuming that the computer-linked technology instrument takes information and accurately records that information, then it has remained purely a communications device. As stated previously we choose to believe that the Body-Mind technology is not merely taking stress measurements, but is communicating with a highly intelligent sub-conscious Body-Mind system. We also believe the technology can aid in improving the quality of life of the individuals involved in this communication process. For more information on Body-Mind technology, please call Dr. Neville Cramer at (480) 483-0094 or email info@biotracker.com.

Be a Sculptor,
to Make a Difference
By: Jim Carr, MBA, Certified Business Coach
Last year in this publication I wrote, “What Leads to Business Bondage” and “Keep What You Have Grow What You Got”. In both of those articles we thoroughly discussed the importance of thinking and acting like a CEO, now it is time for you to be a sculptor. In this new economy, more than ever, it is time to mold your business to run more efficiently, effectively and consistently. Don’t let your business evolve haphazardly and reactively. Proactively shape it or re-shape it to make for smoother operations, consistent client satisfaction and profitable results. You must turn chaos, confusion, and anarchy into order and discipline. Time to standardize and document your business.
Challenge your old beliefs about how your business should work. It is never too early to shape or too late to re-shape your business. It does not matter if your business is 20 years old, 2 years old, 2 months old or on the drawing board, start shaping the company to run without you woven into the very fabric of the business. Design it to run without you supplying all the effort and energy. You cannot control everything you cannot control everyone. When it comes to your business, many of you are the doctor, accountant, head of marketing, billing, and even a web designer. Let go! Start behaving like a strategic business owner.
You do not want to create merely a job for yourself. The ultimate goal of creating a business is to sell it one day, at the highest premium possible. You deserve an acceptable return on your investment of time, talent and effort.
No matter what size, age or industry, every business should be prepared to be sold. Yours is no different. This “start with the end in mind” strategy should help focus you on building an effective business model that doesn’t have you at the center of its universe, relying on your presence, personality and perspiration for its success. Again, you should not be the business and the business should not be you. This work-in-reverse approach not only maximizes your selling price, but also minimizes your hassles and headaches while you own and run the business.
As stated earlier, your goal is to design or re-design your business to work without you having to control every aspect of your business. Your business model should be sculpted in such a way that it can be easily replicated dozens of times in cities around the country. Whether you ever expand or not, such an ambition should help you focus on building a systems-dependent (not owner-dependent) business that generates repeatable performance and consistent results. You must help others get results. Without other people, you don’t run a business -- you work a job.
What is an effective business system? It is simply an integrated web of separate processes, procedures and policies. A business system allows you to get consistent results through other people – tremendous leverage and freedom! The business system is your documented instruction manual for “this is what and how we do it” at our company. Some typical operating processes are as follows:
• Selling
• Marketing
• Manufacturing
• Inventory management
• Order processing/client fulfillment
• Customer service
• Billing and accounts receivable
• Procurement/accounts payable
• Facilities management
• Accounting/finance
• Human resources (i.e. hiring, firing, reviewing, promoting, paying, etc.)
• Information systems
• Office opening and closing procedures
Your business with such processes fully identified and explained will allow your employees to deliver amazing consistency. Employee discretion is minimized. Such a system will also free you from having to make every decision, answer every question and solve every problem, leaving you more time to spend with your patients. You can manage by exception! Such a carefully crafted enterprise will also give you breathing space to think and act like a strategic business owner as well as the time to do personal activities that matter most to you.
Without such a business system in place, no one will want to pay a premium for your broken business. They would not want to buy a dysfunctional business that is solely dependent upon you for its day-to-day operations and survival. If it were obvious that you are a prisoner to your business, why would anyone want to buy into such a life sentence? They would not or would pay very little for such a systems-deficient business. Please grasp this; no one wants to buy a job, a series of headaches, or an owner-centered and owner-dependent business.
To maximize your company’s eventual selling price, realize that buyers want to acquire a smoothly running, money-generating machine. Buyers want to purchase a business system that runs on near autopilot, foolproof status. They want to buy a fully documented, organized business system that gets predictable results. They want an asset that has proven processes, predictable revenue streams, and strong growth potential. They want to buy a well designed, hassle-free, cash flowing asset, not a “pain in the you know what”.
The more of a turnkey, self-managing, self-improving system you develop, the greater the value to a potential buyer. If your business runs well without your being there for every single decision, it will be worth much more to others. And until the day you sell, don’t you want to own and manage the same type of well-designed, well-orchestrated business?
